The Middle School Science course is designed to meet the needs of students grades six through eight. The curriculum covers earth science and environmental science. Inside earth science contains the following content: plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, minerals, and the study of rocks. Outside earth contains the following content: weathering and erosion, minerals and rocks, glaciers, deserts, and soil. Environmental science content includes: population and communities, Ecosystems and biomes, living resources, land, water, air and energy resources. The investigation and research leads to the understanding of societal problems that have real connections in students' lives. Students are involved in the process of inquiry and problem based learning through the integration of language arts, math and social studies. Collaboration and respect for diverse ideas are encouraged. Middle school students focus on evidence which supports their current beliefs, they need to be able to examine their beliefs and concepts in an enriched environment and be provided with scientific theories as alternatives.
