Parker Academy

Health class is reserved primarily to gross anatomy so that each student has a basic understanding of the structure and function of the human body. The course explores how these structures and functions interact and rely on one another in order to establish and maintain a healthy status. The course begins with skeletal system and muscular system. The course then moves into the study of the circulatory system including the flow of blood through the heart. We then progress into the study of digestion and excretion. Specifically, the class is interested in how these two systems maintain homeostasis in the human body. The students learn the major organ functions as well as the path of digestion. Following digestion is the study of the nervous system. This includes a basic understanding of the neuron and in-depth look at diseases of the nervous system and the areas of the brain affected. Finally the semester closes with the study of the reproductive systems of both male and female and embryonic development. The material is presented in a variety of ways such as current research data, theories and interest. The information presented is then discussed in context to the student's previous knowledge as well the myths they believe to be true. All the information is tied together in order to teach the student's how to live healthy.
