The Composition aspect aims to encourage each student to evaluate and practice the skills to improve their writing ability and proficiency. The 6 Traits + 1 of Writing program promotes a student's ability to write by evaluating the work of classmates and receiving feedback on their own efforts. Students practice writing in a variety of forms, including narrative and descriptive essays; compare and contrast and argument pieces; literary analysis; and fiction writing from poetry to short stories and free writing. Organization, revision, and editing are engaged as key components of the writing process. The Literature portion of the course is integrated into the Composition work. Students read works of literature such as poems, short stories, novels, lyrics, and plays to better understand themes, character development, the style of individual author's, and as examples of excellence in different forms of writing. The class examines how novels are translated into film to highlight differences between books and movies. To deepen their appreciation of texts, students teach the class by giving presentations, debate and discuss reading topics, and create posters, PowerPoint presentations, and their own poetry.
