Parker Academy

The Algebra Applications course is a full year course designed to provide experience in using basic algebra to solve practical life problems. The course is a more hands-on approach to learning algebra with a narrowed course scope. The course is designed to devote time to developing skills for life, including the use of calculators.

Topics include measurement skills, units of length, area, volume, weight and velocity. English, metric units and their relationships are presented so that students can make value comparisons at grocery stores. Order of basic arithmetic operations is practiced and the value of estimation skill is demonstrated. Angles, triangles and basic geometric figures are studied with applications in landscape design and architecture. Proportions are learned and applied to the making and reading of blueprints and scale drawings and to scaling recipe ingredients. Percentages, discounts and basic interest calculations are included. Practice performing operations on fractions and decimals support many of the above skills.
