Adventure-English blends many elements of a traditional high school English class with a multitude of adventure and outdoor activities. This course strives to instill in students the ability to reflect on personal experiences as a means by which to generate thoughts and written material. Through exposure to "perceived risk" and novel settings, students gain awareness of themselves and their greater environments. In doing so, strong physical and emotional responses occur that can then be refined and channeled into powerful and honest written work. This course focuses heavily on descriptive writing and the development of the skills needed to "show not tell" the reader. Using various fiction and non-fiction pieces, this course also exposes students to writings that demonstrate reflective work, as well as recount numerous stories of adventure. Course material may range from contemporary non-fiction such as Joe Simpson's "Touching the Void" to classic adventure tales by Ernest Hemingway and Jack London. In addition to the time spent in class, students are provided various adventure experiences. These include many day trips as well as several class overnights throughout the academic year.
